[ARCHIVED] Important Message from Water and Sewer - Sanitary Sewer Overflow First Ave at Lake Quinsig

Notice of Sanitary Sewer Overflow on December 24, 2022, at approximately 3:00PM

At approximately 3:00 PM today, December 24, 2022, the Shrewsbury Water and Sewer Division was alerted to a sanitary sewer overflow (SSO) in the vicinity of First Avenue and Lake Quinsigamond. Crews responded and quickly identified a power issue with the Harvey Place Sewer Station. They were able to get the station back into operation and stop the SSO within 30 minutes of arriving on scene. Unfortunately, approximately 1500 gallons of untreated sewerage was released into Lake Quinsigamond as a result of this event. Residents in the vicinity of this SSO should avoid contact with the lake water.

The Town of Shrewsbury Sewer Division collects and transports an average of over three million gallons of sewerage each day. Two regional wastewater treatment facilities in neighboring communities provide support for treatment and final disposition of the Town's sewerage. The network of approximately 170 miles of mains and 38 pump stations provides sewer service to a large portion of the Town. Several sewer stations, including the Harvey Place Sewer Station, handle a large portion of the Town's daily flow. Despite the best efforts of the Water and Sewer Division to maintain this vital infrastructure in a proactive manner, these unfortunate instances can occur.
