The Board of Selectmen is seeking 1 (one) qualified individual to fill a vacant seat on the Historic District Commission pursuant to G. L. c. 40C and Article 4-H of the Town By-Laws.
The Shrewsbury Historic District was declared locally in 1972 to "offer a visual example of our historic and cultural heritage. To its inhabitants it affords prestige and economic protection from decrease of land values through deterioration of neighborhood blight." The purpose of a local historic district is not to halt growth, but to allow for thoughtful consideration of change.
The Historic District Commission has jurisdiction over two designated Historic Districts in the Town of Shrewsbury:
- The Historic District in the center of Shrewsbury, which extends north of Main Street, including the Town Common, The First Congregational Church, 1830 brick schoolhouse, Library, the southeast section of Mountain View Cemetery, and five historic homes
- The Artemas Ward homestead owned by Harvard University
Historic District Commission members are appointed by the Board of Selectmen for three year terms.
Interested applicants must be registered voters of the Town and are asked to submit a letter of interest and qualifications to the Office of the Board of Selectmen, 100 Maple Avenue, Shrewsbury, MA 01545 or by email to email@example.com no later than September 20, 2022 at 4:30pm. Please contact the Office of the Town Manager at 508-841-8508 with any questions.
