The Commission on Disabilities is established under Massachusetts General Law Chapter 40, Section 8(j), and consists of seven members appointed by the Town Manager and further approved by the Board of Selectmen. It is the goal of the Commission to bring about the full and equal participation of people with disabilities in all aspects of life. The Commission works to assure the advancement of legal rights and for the promotion of maximum opportunities, supportive services, accommodations, and accessibility in a manner which fosters dignity and self-determination. The Commission accomplishes this work through reviewing and commenting on Architectural Access Board (AAB) Variance Applications, recognizing businesses for outstanding disability-friendly services, and promoting the awareness of the needs of people with disabilities.
Pursuant to M.G.L. Chapter 40, Section 8(j), one of the vacant positions must be filled by a person with disabilities. If you have any questions regarding the work of the Commission on Disabilities, please contact the Town Manager's office at 508-841-8508 or by email at jdobson@shrewsburyma.gov.
