The Shrewsbury Senior Mens Club will be, once again, meeting in the Senior Center beginning on Thursday, July 8, under the leadership of newly-elected president, Bill Davis. Meetings run from 9:30-10:30 AM in Side B of the dining room. Members begin to arrive around 9:00 in order to get coffee, a donut and to have an opportunity to catch with friends before the meeting starts.
The club is open to all senior men in and around the community. There is a one-time, lifetime membership fee of $5.00. Getting coffee and a donut costs $2 with the exception of the last meeting of the month, where the cost is $5 which is turned into an end-of-meeting drawing for three cash prizes which includes first prize of $50.
The club works to have a speaker/presentation for each meeting. Programs are quite varied. Some past speakers have included town officials, local business owners, people who work in the health field specializing in senior citizens, and teachers highlighting a variety of school activities. Representatives of Worcester area sports teams; professional, college, and high schools have appeared at meetings as well as outstanding senior student-athletes from Shrewsbury and St. John's High Schools who receive well-deserved recognition.
A few trips are sprinkled in. Before the Covid19 lockout, the club members had opportunities to attend games with the Worcester Bravehearts and the Pawtucket Red Sox (now the WooSox). Other excursions included the Worcester Art Museum, the Essex CT Steam Train and Steamship rides, and the USS Constitution.
Members are whole-heartedly looking forward to getting back to normalcy with the once-a-week meetings.
