Shrewsbury Trails Committee would like to encourage residents to take a First Day Hike on Friday, January 1, 2021 on your own or with immediate family, to sample the winter charm of Shrewsbury’s outdoor spaces.
During walks and hikes observe current Covid-19 safety procedures: mask wearing and social distancing. Dress for the weather and if the location you choose is crowded choose another location or time.
Some suggestions for First Day hikes and walks to celebrate the New Year:
Jordan Pond—The trail here is a paved walk; parking is behind Coolidge School. The calm waters of the pond, frozen or not, make a welcome sight. This trail does not make a loop, so please keep to the right for social distancing from other walkers.
Prospect Park—This park feels away from it all but is centrally located. For a nice loop walk take Juniper trail through the conifer grove and turn left on the paved path, which heads up hill, passing the site of the former Whittall Mansion gardens, now being renewed. Past the water tanks, head downhill to the park entrance, or continue your walk on some of the other trails.
Lake Street Park—There are a variety of walks for all abilities, from the paved path to the right off the entrance drive (green trail) to the level, serene stroll around the meadow ( red trail), to the more adventurous waterside yellow trail.
Carlstrom Memorial Forest, accessed from Gulf Street, and Camp Wunnegan, on Grafton Street, also offer fine walks. In snowy, icy, or muddy conditions these parks may require some personal judgment as to suitability. Park on nearby side streets for these two areas.
Trail maps are posted in the information kiosks at all of the above locations except Jordan Pond. The maps are also available on the Town website under Shrewsbury Trails Committee.
