[ARCHIVED] Water Department Announces Latest Manganese Levels in the Water Supply

The result of the latest test taken of finished water on October 12th revealed a result of 0.41 mg/L (410 ppb) which is above the 0.30 mg/L (300 ppb) level that the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection has issued a fact sheet on. The primary reason for the steady increase in manganese is the prolonged drought conditions not allowing recharge into the aquifer supplying our Home Farm Well sources. This can be illustrated from the following example: Home Farm 6-3 Well Mn level as of 10/29/15 at 0.13 mg/L, Mn level as of 8/10/16 at 0.61 mg/L, Mn level as of 10/12/16 at 1.2 mg/L. This represents an increase of 823% in under a year. We are starting treatment on Friday, October 14th with a mineral that breaks down iron and manganese biofilm buildup, in hopes that a reduction in manganese can be achieved.
