Town of Shrewsbury to Celebrate Energy Efficiency Day 2020
Fifth annual national event urging everyone to
“Save Money. Cut Pollution. Create Jobs.”
Shrewsbury, MA— In recognition of the 5th annual national Energy Efficiency Day (#EEDay2020) on Wednesday, October 7, 2020, The Town of Shrewsbury and Shrewsbury Electric & Cable Operations are joining regional and national organizations, businesses, utilities, universities, and individuals in promoting energy efficiency – the cheapest, quickest way to meet our energy needs, cut utility bills, and reduce pollution.
Energy efficiency is also an economic engine, amassing a U.S. workforce of nearly 2.4 million by the beginning of this year. Ranging from professional services to manufacturing, installation, and construction, these good jobs are local and cannot be outsourced.
“Energy efficiency provides a unique opportunity for communities to make energy investments that support increased adoption of renewable resources while also lowering monthly costs. These efforts are critical to balancing economic growth and carbon reduction goals,” said Chris Roy, General Manager of Shrewsbury Electric & Cable Operations.
Smarter energy use means we don’t have to generate as much power to meet our needs. Many people don’t realize that SELCO has already made significant, forward-thinking investments in energy savings through our comprehensive residential and commercial energy efficiency programs, benefiting residents, businesses, and the community at large.
SELCO’s advocacy of energy efficiency extends beyond Energy Efficiency Day, with programs designed to support residential and commercial adoption of efficiency measures year round. Programs include commercial lighting rebates, free home energy audits, appliance rebates, building envelope air sealing and insulation incentives, HVAC upgrade incentives and more. SELCO also actively promotes strategic electrification through adoption of electric vehicles and heat pump technologies. Additionally, our renewable energy options include residential solar rebates, community solar, and the "Green Light" green choice energy program. SELCO will also be launching a connected homes program in 2021 to further encourage adoption of efficient technologies and intelligent use of energy in our community.
Reducing the energy used by manufacturers, homes, and businesses benefits everyone – especially energy bill-payers. The average household saves almost $500 yearly thanks to efficiency standards that apply to new appliances such as dishwashers, refrigerators and water heaters, alone.
The Town of Shrewsbury was officially designated as Green Community on December 27, 2018. The Town is dedicated to reducing energy consumption by 20% by the year 2023. “As a Green Community it is a goal of the Town of Shrewsbury to monitor our energy use and increase energy efficiency within our municipal buildings and operations whenever possible. Even small changes can add up to significant savings for the taxpayers, reduce pollution, and make a positive impact on the environment.” Said Beth Casavant, Chair of the Board of Selectmen.
