[ARCHIVED] UPDATE: Enhanced Larval Control Measures for EEE Mitigation (Round 2)- May 30, 2020

Central MA Mosquito Control Project logo

Update as of June 2, 2020: Aerial and ground treatments for 2 mosquito species implicated in the EEE transmission cycle using the organically-certified pesticide spinosad (Natular®) have been completed in 21 member communities. Approximately 550 acres were treated in Cs. melanura habitat by air and ground, and over 1,930 acres of Cq. perturbans habitat were treated by air and ground.

Mosquito surveillance has begun and testing of mosquitoes for mosquito-borne viruses will commence the week of June 8, 2020 by the Mass. Dept. of Public Health. Trapping and testing will occur in your community well into September.

Prior communication:

The Central MA Mosquito Control Project (CMMCP) is scheduled to start round 2 of these applications Beginning SUNDAY, MAY 30, 2020 and will run 2-3 days in all 21 communities it services.

2020 Program details and treatment maps are available at: Central MA Mosquito Control Project (CMMCP)

Rotary equipment (helicopter) will be used for these applications in areas greater than five (5) acres, and follow up treatments by hand or backpack applications will be done in smaller habitats by CMMCP field staff. The helicopter will maintain a buffer zone around homes.

The application is a granular product (not liquid). If residents would like to close their windows, please feel free to do so but it is not necessary.  Pets can be inside or out, as there is very little toxicity to animals. Plants do not need to be covered, as it’s a certified organic product.

Please click the Enhanced Larval Control Measures for EEE - Round 2 link below for information on CMMCP’s enhanced larval treatment plans for EEE mitigation in 2020 targeting the second mosquito species of concern called Cq. perturbans (aka, the cattail mosquito: targeted areas are in blue)*.
