The Allston Viaduct, which carries the Massachusetts Turnpike (I-90) between the Allston Interchange and the Commonwealth Avenue Bridge, is nearing the end of its useful lifespan, and must be replaced. In addition, the toll booth plazas at the interchange are no longer necessary due to the switch to All Electronic Tolling. These conditions present the opportunity to straighten the turnpike and make improvements to multimodal connections in this area.
