Resident Assistance Program

The Shrewsbury Resident Assistance Program is funded through the American Rescue Plan Act to help Shrewsbury residents manage costs associated with overdue utilities, rent, or mortgage payments.

Eligible residents will be allowed one application for assistance per household through November 30, 2024, and the program will run until funds are depleted. To be considered, an applicant must provide the following documentation and is encouraged to work with Shrewsbury Youth and Family Services (SYFS), the Council on Aging (COA), or St. Anne’s Human Services to complete the necessary applications and start the process for long-term assistance from state-funded support programs.

Program Requirements

Applicants must provide the following documentation to be considered for assistance:

  1. Proof of residency in Shrewsbury such as: a valid driver’s license or state-issued identification card, copy of a utility bill (current within 60 days), copy of passport, rental agreement, or other piece of first class mail.
  2. Copy of completed South Middlesex Opportunity Council (SMOC) or Residential Assistance for Families in Transition (RAFT) application. For assistance completing these applications please contact SYFS, the COA or St. Anne’s Human Services.
  3. Copy of overdue utility bill (oil, gas, electric, propane), past due or shut-off notice if applying for utility assistance.
  4. Statement from landlord of back rent due if applying for rental assistance or past due notice of mortgage payment if applying for mortgage assistance.

Applicants may provide any additional information they feel is applicable, and the Town or service organization may request additional information if necessary to determine eligibility.

Applicants are eligible for up to $1,000 in utility assistance and/or up to $2,000 in rental or mortgage assistance. Payments will be issued directly to the vendor (such as the landlord, or utility company). The vendor will be required to provide a completed Form W-9.
